The mission of the Freshman Premedical Mentorship Program is to provide a comprehensive peer-advising network for freshmen interested in a future in the field of medicine as they transition into life in college.
The Freshman Premedical Mentorship Program is a program founded in 2011 that networks incoming freshmen with premedical students in their junior and senior years. Freshmen are matched with upperclassmen with similar academic backgrounds and interests, in particular but not limited to those in the medical field, to form small (five- or six-person) mentorship groups. Mentors share their experiences as premedical students at Princeton with, amongst other subjects, various courses, major choices, study habits, and extracurricular activities such as research and clinical work. They will also encourage their freshmen to consult the Health Professions Advising Office for specific questions regarding medical schools and professions. During the year, the Princeton Premedical Society will also hold social events that all participants in the program are encouraged to attend. The goal of the program is to foster a strong sense of community among premedical students of all classes and to provide freshmen with a personal resource they can turn to for peer perspectives on any and all questions they may have as they prepare at Princeton for a successful future career in the field of medicine.
Your academic adviser and the Health Professions Advising Office are wonderful and essential resources, but the importance of complementing their perspectives with those of student peers on college life at Princeton cannot be understated. This program is designed to fill this need and be flexible, informal, and completely tailored to your needs. All mentors and freshmen are expected to meet with their groups a minimum of once a month—with more frequent interactions strongly urged—which is a minimal time commitment that we expect even the busiest Princeton student can make, and one that we will facilitate with social events during the year. We look forward to meeting all of you!
